Those boring bits…

Do you need to know the notes,  practise scales, all those boring things?

I’d say -it depends, but as in so many domains, what you get out of this will be contingent on what you put in. Knowing the materials and the tools of the activity you’re embarking upon can lead you to a more satisfying experience than driving blindly, guided only by instinct and imitation. To know the notes, chords, scales -definitely yes. Being able to read music, wade through the circle of fifths, etc -depends on what you want to achieve at the end of it. The more you put in, the more you’ll get out of this.
